As many companies are quickly discovering, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 is a powerful and capable platform. However, MOSS 2007 does not provide a viewer for TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) files to enable the indexing, searching, and retrieval of the critical scanned documents and faxes that are captured as TIFF images (the primary output of most fax machines and scanning devices). For companies that want to execute full text searches across their corporate databases this presents a challenge. To address the need to efficiently unlock the valuable content in TIFF files, Captaris has produced the TIFF iFilter for MOSS 2007.
The TIFF iFilter (plug-in to index file formats so they are searchable) was released by Captaris in September 2008 and leverages the powerful Captaris OCR (Optical Character Recognition) engine to capture the full page content in the file and make the data available to the Microsoft indexing engine. Once indexed, the images can be searched through MOSS 2007, Search Server 2008 and Search Server 2008 Express. The full content stored in TIFF files is now quickly available to your team.
Finally, the TIFF iFilter is an inexpensive option. The Standard edition is priced at $299 for two core servers and the Professional edition is priced at $499 for four core servers.
