Are You a Digital Native or Digital Immigrant?
Industry Buzz: Open Text Acquires Captaris

New Risetime Publication: Talking Biz Talk White Paper |

According to theories introduced by Marc Prensky, an internationally acclaimed speaker, writer, consultant, and designer, the digital age and new technologies have created a fundamental shift in learning styles and habits. These learning styles and habits can be summarized into three groups:
Digital Native: an individual who has grown up with digital technology such as the computer, the internet, mobile phones, and MP3 players. Generation: Millennial, Born 1981-2000 Habits: Reads documents and emails on-screen, utilizes digital communication heavily including email, blogs, message boards, and social media.
Digital Immigrant: an individual who grew up without digital technology and adopted it later. Generation: Baby Boomers, Born 1946-1962 Habits: Prints documents and emails to read, utilizes traditional communication (phone, face-to-face meetings) more often than digital.
Generation X: Born 1963-1980, you are the in-between group and most likely have a combination of habits and styles of both digital immigrants and natives.
Not everyone agrees with Prensky’s definitions of Natives vs. Immigrants, claiming that separating the groups by age is unfair, and that additional quantifiable research into the matter is needed. Prensky has published several papers applying these theories to learning in the classroom - but what about the workplace? Both Natives and Immigrants can learn from each other through awareness of the other’s view on communication style and workplace habits:

Among other applications, this awareness could be used for greater understanding of coworker’s expectations around such everyday work items as email responses and telecommuting.
